For the first time since the war began, Russia strikes Kyiv government building, marking a dangerous new phase of the conflict. The Cabinet of Ministers building, a symbol of Ukraine’s political power, was set on fire after overnight missile and drone attacks shook the capital.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the Kyiv government building was damaged as the roof and upper floors caught fire “due to an enemy attack.” At least four people died, including a young mother and her two-month-old baby, after their apartment block in Kyiv’s Svyatoshynskyi district was destroyed.

The Ukrainian air force described the strike as one of the largest overnight assaults since the start of the full-scale invasion. More than 800 missiles and drones were launched, with 65 successfully hitting 37 locations across the country.

Zelensky Condemns Russia’s Attacks

President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the assault, stressing that the strike on the Kyiv government building showed Moscow’s intention to prolong the war.

“Such killings now, when diplomacy could have started long ago, are deliberate crimes,” Zelensky said, urging world leaders to step up action against Russia.

A Symbolic and Dangerous First

Until now, Kyiv’s city center was considered heavily protected, but the attack on the Kyiv government building proves that nowhere is truly safe. Mayor Vitali Klitschko suggested the strike could have been caused by falling debris from an intercepted drone, but officials say investigations are ongoing.

Residents were left shaken. One survivor, Valentina, said she and her husband were asleep when their apartment windows shattered from the blast. “At least we’re alive,” she said, though deeply saddened by the loss of her neighbor and her baby.

Widespread Damage Across Ukraine

Beyond the Kyiv government building, Russia’s overnight strikes caused destruction in Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv. Homes, nurseries, and infrastructure were hit, leaving dozens injured.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces also carried out drone strikes inside Russia, including attacks on an oil pipeline in Bryansk. The conflict continues to escalate, with no signs of peace.
