Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has secured a massive continental role. He was elected as the new President of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) during the organization’s 9th Biennial General Meeting, which recently concluded in Accra, Ghana.
This election places him squarely in a crucial position of African anti-corruption network leadership, a significant achievement that showcases his reputation for integrity across the continent. This key development happened shortly after the Speaker delivered a keynote address at the event, where he strongly urged African parliaments to take a more ferocious, leading role in fighting the “monstrous evil” of corruption.

Accepting the role, Mr. Bagbin quickly pledged his absolute commitment to promoting integrity in public life and supporting Africa’s joint fight against corruption. He used his platform to praise the outgoing President and Board Members of APNAC for their dedicated service, acknowledging that their efforts have built a firm foundation for the new administration to build upon.
This transfer of power marks a new chapter in the network’s history, emphasizing a smooth transition and a continued focus on its core mission. Mr. Bagbin stressed that the Network remains very thankful for the collective wisdom and lasting contribution of its former leaders.
This new position is the second high-profile international appointment for the Speaker in recent times. Just a few weeks prior, he was appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force, a global team of eight parliamentarians dedicated to finding a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The IPU President highlighted Mr. Bagbin’s “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties” as the main reasons for his selection to this delicate international peace initiative. As part of his duties with the Task Force, Mr. Bagbin attends high-level meetings and participates in direct discussions with parliamentary delegations from both Ukraine and Russia.
The new APNAC President has promised to work very closely with lawmakers across Africa to advance the network’s critical objectives. He noted that lasting progress in the battle against corruption depends heavily on unity and cooperation among all member parliaments. APNAC itself is a continental body created to bring together legislators dedicated to tackling corruption through better parliamentary oversight, key policy reforms, and institutional accountability.
Mr. Bagbin firmly stated that a collective effort is vital for strengthening parliaments, greatly improving accountability, and successfully building a continent where integrity is not just an expectation, but a standard practice across all sectors. This clear commitment defines his vision for the future of African anti-corruption network leadership.
