One person has been confirmed dead following a clash between police and galamseyers at Bepo Tenten in the Odotobiri Constituency of the Ashanti Region. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety and illegal mining activities in the area.
According to a report released by the Ghana Police Service on their official Facebook page, the Ashanti Regional Police Command is investigating an attack on officers from the Jacobu District Patrol Team while they were carrying out routine duties at Bepotenten Sukuum on 23rd January 2026.
The police explained that officers recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy and instructed him to inform the owner of the weapon to report to the police station with the required documents. However, while returning from patrol, the officers were confronted by a crowd of about 100 civilians, many of whom were armed with cutlasses and firearms.
The situation escalated into a violent clash between police and galamseyers, during which the crowd attacked the officers and managed to seize a police service rifle. In the confrontation that followed, the individual who took the rifle was shot by the police, while another suspect was injured. The police later recovered the stolen weapon.
The Ghana Police Service has strongly warned the public against attacking law enforcement officers, stressing that anyone involved in such acts will be tracked down and prosecuted under the law. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing as authorities work to restore calm and ensure accountability.
