The sad news of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi dead has hit Ghana’s political scene. The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025. Sources close to his family confirmed the death, though the cause has not yet been revealed.
An alleged brother of the late MP Ernest Kumi stated in an interview on UTV that Mr. Kumi had travelled yesterday and returned this morning. Shortly after arriving, he complained of heart pains and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors reportedly struggled to administer drips, which was seen as a sign of his death. PN Media has not confirmed this account, but it is what the alleged brother shared during the live interview.
The 40-year-old lawmaker was active in Parliament just days before his passing. His death comes as a shock to colleagues, especially since he had just been cleared of a major court case that had threatened his career.
Parliament Reacts to Ernest Kumi’s Sudden Death
Parliament officially adjourned its sitting to Tuesday, July 8, 2025, following the news of the death of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi. The First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, expressed his sorrow and offered condolences to Kumi’s family and the people of Akwatia.
MPs from both political sides paid tribute, describing him as a dedicated servant who always pushed for development in his constituency.
Akwatia’s Legal Drama Before the MP’s Passing
The Akwatia seat had been one of the most contested in the 2024 elections. Ernest Kumi won with 19,269 votes, beating the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye. But the win didn’t come without drama.
The opposition NDC filed a legal petition, claiming vote-buying and irregularities. A Koforidua High Court later issued an injunction, stopping Kumi from acting as MP. He was later convicted for contempt after defying the order. A bench warrant was also issued for his arrest.
Supreme Court Clears Kumi in Election Dispute
In a legal twist, the Supreme Court overturned the contempt ruling in June 2025. The judges ruled 4–1 in favor of Kumi, saying the High Court had no jurisdiction because the Electoral Commission had not yet gazetted the results. His legal team, led by NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs Gary Nimako-Marfo, argued judicial bias and breach of natural justice.
This ruling came just weeks before Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi dead became headline news.

Ernest Kumi’s Life Before Politics
Born on December 5, 1984, in Akim Wenchi, Ernest Kumi was a Christian and first-time MP. Before entering politics, he worked as a senior manager at American Tower Corporation.
He held several academic degrees including:
- MSc in Defence and International Politics (GAFCSC)
- MBA in Corporate Governance (UPSA)
- LLB in Law (Mountcrest University)
- BSc in Ports & Shipping Admin (RMU)
In Parliament, he served on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee and the House Committee.
What Happens Next in Akwatia?
With Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi dead, the seat is now vacant. Ghana’s electoral laws require a by-election when an MP passes away. The NPP is expected to present a new candidate, and there’s speculation over whether Kumi’s widow will step forward.
Historically, several widows of MPs have succeeded their husbands in Parliament. The Akwatia constituency and the NPP now face a new chapter, only months after a legal battle was won.
