The visit of football legend Lionel Messi to Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium ended in chaos after he left the stadium much earlier than fans expected. Thousands of supporters who had paid high ticket prices were left frustrated, sparking a riot, vandalism, and a government investigation. The incident has brought global attention to event planning and fan safety in India.

The Argentine star was in India as part of his “GOAT Tour,” which included stops in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. Fans filled the stadium, some paying up to 12,000 rupees to see him in person. During the event, he walked around the pitch and waved to supporters. However, he was surrounded by officials and celebrities, making it difficult for most fans to see him. After only 20–30 minutes, security escorted him out of the stadium, ending his appearance abruptly.

Frustrated attendees responded violently at the Messi event. Fans stormed the pitch, tore down banners, threw chairs and water bottles, and damaged stadium property. Police and security struggled to control the crowd, and officers reportedly used batons to disperse rioters. Many fans expressed disappointment, saying they expected a longer appearance or even a brief exhibition match. The lack of proper crowd management fueled anger and unrest.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologized publicly to the football icon and his fans. She described the situation as shocking and announced the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the mismanagement. Authorities also confirmed the main event organiser had been detained. Officials are looking into refunding ticket holders who were unable to see the star properly. The All India Football Federation clarified it had no involvement in the private event.

A spokesperson said he had fulfilled the agreed time commitment. Responsibility for the event’s execution lies with the organisers, according to the spokesperson. During the visit, he was accompanied by Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul. Despite security, his car was later swarmed by fans outside the stadium.

The riot during the tour highlights the importance of proper planning at high-profile celebrity events. Kolkata has one of India’s most passionate football fan bases, and mismanaged expectations can quickly lead to unrest. Experts say this event serves as a reminder that clear communication, strong security, and fan-first planning are essential for international events in India.

The visit, intended as a historic celebration of one of football’s greatest players, instead ended in chaos and anger. The Messi incident has raised questions about security, planning, and transparency, and will likely influence how future high-profile events are organised in India.
