Bernard Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election after securing 18,199 votes, representing about 54 percent of the total. His main challenger, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 15,235 votes, while Patrick Owusu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed only 82. Out of 33,819 ballots cast across 119 polling stations, 303 were rejected.

This victory is a major comeback for the NDC in a constituency that has historically shifted between both major parties. Since 1992, the NPP has won Akwatia five times while the NDC has taken it four times, making it one of Ghana’s most competitive seats. Bernard Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election at a time when the party needed to strengthen its influence in the Eastern Region.

His victory also comes after the passing of the former NPP MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who won the seat in the 2024 general elections with 19,269 votes against 17,206 for the NDC candidate. Kumi’s win was later tied to a court dispute before his sudden death in July 2025.

The result re-establishes the NDC’s influence in the Denkyembour District and positions the party strongly for upcoming national elections.
