The new Accra–Kumasi Expressway is one of Ghana’s most important road projects captured in the 2026 Budget. It is a completely new six-lane, 198.7km highway designed to reduce traffic, improve safety, and support faster trade between the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions. The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to halve travel time between Accra and Kumasi and cut transport costs by nearly 40%, making movement of goods and passengers more efficient.

The expressway forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme. It will be Ghana’s first purpose-built expressway with modern features, including limited access points, higher speed limits, emergency services, and improved road safety technology. The project is planned for completion within three years and is expected to be commissioned before January 6, 2029.

The route of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway will run through key towns such as Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, Ofoase, and Kwaso, entering Kumasi from the Lake Road area. It will include eight major interchanges and several significant bridges over the Birim and Pra rivers, helping reduce congestion and improve regional connectivity.

From the total 198.7km length, 23km of urban road sections will be built in Accra and Kumasi with four lanes and speeds up to 60km/h. The main expressway section will cover 175km and be built as a full six-lane highway with driving speeds of up to 120km/h. The Accra–Kumasi Expressway will shorten the current travel distance by over 50km, reducing it from about 250km to 198.7km.

The government aims to finance the project mainly through domestic funding within the GH¢30 billion Big Push budget. Construction of the expressway is expected to create more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs, and also stimulate economic activity along the corridor, including industrial parks, logistics centres, fuel stations, rest points, EV charging stations, and service hubs operating under the 24-Hour Economy vision.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway represents a major step toward safer roads, faster travel, and stronger economic growth across southern and middle Ghana.
