US must own Greenland to protect national security and stop Russia and China from gaining control, according to President Donald Trump. Speaking to reporters, Trump insisted that ownership, not agreements or leases, is the only way the United States can secure the strategically important Arctic territory.

President Donald Trump has renewed strong claims that the US must own Greenland to prevent rival global powers from expanding their influence in the Arctic region. He warned that failure to act could allow Russia or China to move into Greenland, which he described as a direct threat to American security interests. Trump stressed that defending leased land is ineffective, adding that true protection only comes with full ownership.

Trump said the United States would prefer to acquire Greenland peacefully but made it clear that tougher actions could follow if negotiations fail. He stated that the US would do it “the easy way or the hard way,” sparking concern among NATO allies and Greenlandic leaders. According to Trump, allowing Russia or China to become neighbors through Greenland is unacceptable, reinforcing his belief that the US must own Greenland to maintain regional stability.

Greenland and Denmark have firmly rejected the idea of selling the semi-autonomous territory. Greenland’s political leaders issued a united statement emphasizing that their future should be decided only by the Greenlandic people. They made it clear that they do not want to become Americans or Danes, but wish to remain Greenlanders with full control over their destiny.

Despite its small population, Greenland holds major strategic value due to its location between North America and the Arctic. The region plays a key role in missile detection systems and maritime monitoring. The United States already maintains a long-standing military presence at its Pituffik base, with the ability to deploy more troops under existing agreements with Denmark. However, Trump argues this is not enough and insists again that the US must own Greenland to ensure long-term security.

Trump also claimed, without providing evidence, that Russian and Chinese activity around Greenland is increasing. He believes that waiting too long could allow foreign powers to gain influence over the territory. These remarks have alarmed European leaders, who warned that any attempt to seize Greenland by force would seriously damage international alliances and violate global principles of sovereignty.

Interest in Greenland has also grown because of its natural resources, including rare earth minerals, uranium, iron, and potential oil and gas reserves. As climate change reduces ice coverage, access to these resources has become easier, further increasing geopolitical attention on the island. This growing competition has strengthened Trump’s position that the US must own Greenland to protect both economic and military interests.

Denmark’s allies, including major European nations and Canada, have expressed strong support for Greenland and Denmark, stating clearly that only Greenlanders have the right to determine their future. They have called for cooperation among allies rather than unilateral action and urged respect for international law and territorial integrity.

Trump previously proposed buying Greenland in 2019, an offer that was quickly rejected. Now, with renewed pressure and stronger language, the debate has resurfaced, raising global concern over the future of the Arctic region and international stability.
