The donation of a new fire truck by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is set to strengthen emergency response and improve public safety in Obuasi. This truck donation comes at a time when the community urgently needed better equipment to fight fire outbreaks. The new fire tender will support firefighters in Obuasi and nearby communities, ensuring faster and more effective emergency operations.
Ing. Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, said the company stepped in because the current fire tender used by the Obuasi Fire Service was very old and unreliable. He explained that the former Fire Service Commander had already discussed the need for a new one with the company.

He added that AngloGold Ashanti often had to use its own fire trucks to assist the community, especially when the Obuasi Fire Service had challenges responding. Sometimes it could even be an employee’s house that is burning, so supporting the fire service directly helps both the community and the company.

Hon. Faustilove Appiah-Kannin, MCE for Obuasi Municipal, expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for the support. She noted that although providing a fire truck is normally the government’s responsibility, the company has stepped up to help. She urged the Fire Service to take good care of the new truck, stressing that proper maintenance is important because many institutions in Ghana struggle to keep new equipment in good condition.
She added that the new fire tender, together with the existing one, will strengthen the Fire Service’s ability to handle fire emergencies. She referenced a recent fire incident at Kunka Junction where early response prevented a major disaster. Maintaining the new fire truck well will ensure that Obuasi remains safe and continues to receive support in the future.
