One Arrested After Obuasi Funeral Shooting Incident That Injured the Dompoase Chief

A funeral in Obuasi has drawn major attention after the Dompoasehene, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, was injured by a stray bullet during the ceremony. Reports confirm that one person has been arrested as police continue investigations into the Obuasi funeral shooting incident.

Authorities say the chief was attending the funeral of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, when a musket accidentally fired. The chief and other dignitaries were greeting traditional rulers when the unexpected shot went off. A musketeer discharged a firearm during the ceremony which injured the King. He was rushed to the hospital and has been discharged.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, was immediately arrested. Police confirmed that he is helping with investigations to determine what led to the shooting incident. The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, stated that the incident shows why the Interior Ministry’s temporary nationwide ban on firing guns at funerals and traditional gatherings is necessary. He explained that the directive aims to prevent injuries, protect lives, and maintain peaceful ceremonies.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council also reported that the Ghana Police Service acted swiftly by securing the scene and arresting the suspect. They confirmed that the Dompoasehene received prompt medical care and has since been discharged home. Officials stressed that the incident should remind the public of the importance of obeying safety rules at community events.

The Regional Minister urged everyone to stay calm and cooperate with security agencies. He noted that enforcing the ban on firearms at funerals is essential to avoid any repeating of the shooting incident. Authorities assured residents that they remain committed to protecting lives, maintaining order, and strengthening public safety across the Ashanti Region.
