The tragic stampede during the recent military recruitment has led to a major directive from the government. President Mahama has asked the families of the six applicants who died to nominate a qualified person to take their place in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). This important decision gives the grieving families a chance to get a job slot in the military. This news was shared by Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi during a visit to one of the affected families. This unique form of support is a direct move from the presidency to help those who suffered a great loss.
Due to the accident, President John Dramani Mahama ordered a stop to all recruitment activities in Accra. This suspension will last until better safety measures are put in place to prevent future incidents. The government team also promised that the state will help the families pay for the funerals. They said the government will stand with them during this very hard time.
In Parliament, members paid respect to the young people who died. They asked for big changes to the GAF recruitment process. They want the process to be more spread out across the country. This would stop huge crowds and prevent similar accidents. The Members of Parliament also talked about the high number of unemployed youth in the nation.
The acting Minister of Defence confirmed that GAF has started an investigation to find out why the stampede happened. He confirmed that while the Accra recruitment is stopped, the exercises in other regions will continue.
President John Dramani Mahama has already visited the injured victims at the 37 Military Hospital to offer his support in person. This full response, led by President Mahama, shows the government is taking the matter seriously and focusing on the victims’ families.
