U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may take military action in Nigeria following what he described as the government’s failure to stop attacks on Christians.

In a strong statement posted on social media, Trump said he had directed the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria, adding that all U.S. aid to the country could be cut if the violence continues. He accused the Nigerian government of allowing “the killing of Christians” and vowed that America would respond “fast and powerfully” if the situation does not improve.

Trump’s warning came after he announced that Nigeria had been listed as a “country of particular concern” for alleged violations of religious freedom. He claimed that “Christianity is facing an existential threat” in the West African nation, blaming what he called “radical Islamic terrorists” for the ongoing attacks.

In response, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected Trump’s claims, saying that Nigeria upholds religious freedom and tolerance for all citizens. Tinubu emphasized that the country’s constitution guarantees the rights of people from all faiths and that Nigeria “does not encourage or support any form of religious persecution.”

“The characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” Tinubu said. “Our administration continues to engage both Christian and Muslim leaders to promote peace and unity.”

Tensions between communities in Nigeria have long been fueled by a mix of religious, ethnic, and economic factors. While Christians have been targeted in some attacks, experts note that many victims of armed groups are also Muslims living in the country’s northern region. Groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have carried out violent acts against civilians for years, worsening insecurity across the country.

Despite the complex situation, Trump insists that the U.S. must take a firm stand, saying that military action in Nigeria could be the only way to stop what he calls “atrocities against cherished Christians.” His comments have sparked international debate, with some urging caution and others supporting his call for tougher measures against religious persecution.
