A fire destroyed China City Mall in Kumasi, causing massive damage to the popular shopping complex and goods worth millions. The blaze started on Thursday, October 30, 2025, quickly turning the new commercial hub near the Santasi roundabout into ruins.
What Happened?
The fire reportedly started in the afternoon and spread rapidly through the China City Mall. Eyewitnesses described the smoke as thick and the fire as moving incredibly fast. The mall housed numerous shops selling a variety of affordable imported goods, including electronics, groceries, clothing, and home items.
Tragically, the intense speed of the flames meant most traders were unable to save any of their stock or investments. The mall, which had only opened earlier this year, was completely lost.

Firefighters’ Response
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) quickly arrived and fought the intense blaze for hours. The Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Peter Tetteh, noted that the types of materials inside the mall (combustible goods) made the fire spread extremely fast.
Fortunately, officials confirmed that no casualties were recorded, as many workers were on break when the fire started. However, the building suffered severe structural damage and will likely need to be pulled down.
The Impact
While the loss of life was avoided, the economic impact is expected to be devastating. Many business owners watched helplessly as their years of hard work turned to ash. Since it opened, the event where a fire destroyed China City Mall in Kumasi also meant the loss of a major and diverse shopping spot for local residents.
The GNFS and the police have now cordoned off the area and begun a full investigation to find the exact cause of the fire. The community is left to deal with the major commercial gap after a fire destroyed China City Mall in Kumasi.
