The US lifts visa restrictions on Ghana, giving citizens access to five-year multiple-entry visas and other privileges. This change follows months of diplomatic talks between the two nations.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the development during the UN General Assembly in New York. He explained that the US decision is a big win for Ghana, as citizens can now travel more easily for education, business, and family purposes. The announcement came directly from US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker.

The US lifts visa restrictions on Ghana after strict policies introduced in July had reduced visa validity to just three months with single entry. That policy created difficulties for many travellers, especially students and business people. Now, the new directive restores five-year visas for visitors and four-year student visas, all with multiple entry.
Ablakwa described the breakthrough as proof of improved Ghana-US relations. He added that other consular benefits are expected, which will further help Ghanaians abroad.
The reversal also comes after Ghana agreed to receive West African deportees under the ECOWAS free movement protocol. Critics argue this policy turns Ghana into a deportation hub, but officials insist it is humanitarian and not an endorsement of US immigration policy.
Despite the concerns, the lifted visa restrictions on Ghana signals stronger ties between Accra and Washington. It also makes travel, education, and business easier for many citizens who rely on long-term visas.
With this outcome, Ghana has shown that persistent diplomacy can lead to positive results.
