US President Donald Trump has announced a $15bn lawsuit against the New York Times, accusing the paper of defamation and political bias. The Trump $15bn lawsuit against New York Times is one of his biggest legal moves yet against the media. In his post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the Times has been allowed to lie and smear him for too long, and he promised that it must stop.

Donald Trump’s $15bn lawsuit against New York Times was filed in Florida, a Republican stronghold, with the president accusing the newspaper of acting as a mouthpiece for the Democratic Party. Trump pointed to the Times’ endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, saying it was an example of political interference and media bias.

Trump also attacked several New York Times articles and a book written by its reporters, claiming they spread falsehoods about his business, family, and presidency. According to the complaint, these publications were filled with distortions and fabrications. His lawyers argue that the coverage was part of a long-term effort to damage his reputation.

This is not the first time Trump has taken the New York Times to court. Previous lawsuits, including one over his tax records and another linked to Russian election interference, were dismissed. He also lost a defamation suit against CNN in 2023. Despite these setbacks, Trump has continued to pursue legal action, saying that media outlets are working against him and the America First movement.

The lawsuit against New York Times also names four of its reporters and the publisher Penguin Random House as defendants. The 85-page complaint accuses them of malicious defamation, election interference, and biased reporting. Trump said the Times has become a leading purveyor of falsehoods and is damaging American democracy.

Trump has also sued other major outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and Paramount, with some cases ending in multimillion-dollar settlements. Still, the $15bn lawsuit against New York Times remains one of the most high-profile and costly cases in his battle against the media.
