Ghana is mourning a devastating loss following the Adansi Akrofuom helicopter crash, which killed eight people, including two top government ministers. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The crash involved a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter en route to Obuasi for a national event. The aircraft lost radar contact and was later found destroyed with no survivors. Authorities have confirmed the deaths and launched a full investigation into the cause.

- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Samuel Aboagye, former NDC Parliamentary Candidate
They were joined by three military crew members:
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, announced the tragic deaths at a press conference and directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the victims.

Crash Details and Response
The helicopter took off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. but lost contact shortly after. It later crashed at Adansi Brofeyedu, near Obuasi, where it was found burnt beyond recognition. Emergency response teams arrived at the site quickly, but unfortunately, there were no survivors.
Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft may have crashed into a tree, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
The officials were heading to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a major government initiative aimed at improving Ghana’s small-scale mining sector. President Nana Akufo-Addo was originally scheduled to attend but canceled due to another engagement.
This is Ghana’s second helicopter incident in less than two years. A crash in March 2024 near Bonsukrom resulted in no fatalities. However, the Adansi Akrofuom helicopter crash has shaken the nation due to the high-profile nature of the victims.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation, and the public awaits answers.
The Adansi Akrofuom helicopter crash is one of the most tragic events in recent Ghanaian history. The loss of dedicated public servants and brave military personnel is being felt across the nation. As investigations continue, Ghanaians are united in grief and remembrance.
