Two nannies arrested for drugging twin babies in East Legon have shocked many Ghanaians after details of their disturbing actions were revealed by police.

The suspects, Francisca Boakye, a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Volta Region, were accused of secretly giving sleep-inducing drugs to their employer’s two-year-old twin boys.

According to the Airport Divisional Police Command, the two nannies arrested for drugging twin babies in East Legon allegedly used a substance suspected to be Dynewell to make the toddlers sleep for long hours without their mother’s consent.

Their employer, a 41-year-old businesswoman, noticed strange drowsiness and behavioural changes in her children in September 2025, prompting her to report the case to the police.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Accra Regional Police Command, confirmed that investigations showed the nannies had been using the sleep-inducing substance to have more free time for house chores. During questioning, one of the suspects admitted to learning the practice from her colleague.

Further investigations revealed that apart from giving the children the drugs, the two also subjected them to other forms of abuse. They reportedly burned the toddlers’ hands with fire and insulted them by calling them names like “chimpanzee.” The cruel acts are said to have gone on for about eight months.

A police search in their room uncovered two used sachets and four unused sachets of the suspected drug. The evidence has been sent for forensic testing. Both suspects have since been charged and remanded by the court, with their next appearance scheduled for October 20, 2025.

Superintendent Obeng strongly condemned the inhumane treatment of the children and urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant in monitoring domestic workers.
