The sole survivor of Air India crash, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, shocked the world when he walked away from the wreckage of a devastating plane crash that killed 241 people. The crash occurred just seconds after takeoff in Ahmedabad, India, as Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, exploded into flames after hitting a building.

Ramesh, seated in 11A near the emergency exit, somehow survived the heat, fire, and smoke that engulfed the plane. He managed to crawl through a gap in the fuselage after unbuckling his seatbelt and pushing himself through a narrow space.

Eyewitness videos showed the 40-year-old British businessman limping toward an ambulance with a blood-stained shirt. Speaking later from his hospital bed, he said he saw passengers and crew die in front of him. “I thought I was going to die too,” he told Indian media. “But when I opened my eyes and saw an opening, I just escaped.”

The sole survivor of Air India crash described how the plane’s lights flickered green and white moments after takeoff. Then, it suddenly slammed into a building used as a medical hostel. His section of the plane ended up near the ground, away from the main impact area.

Ramesh had been returning to the UK from a holiday in India with his brother, who was also onboard but didn’t survive. After escaping the plane, Ramesh made a video call to his family in Leicester to let them know he was alive.

Doctors treating him said he was in stable condition despite multiple injuries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah visited him in the hospital.

The crash investigation is ongoing, but officials have recovered one of the black boxes, which may provide insight into what caused the plane to crash so quickly after takeoff.

Experts and officials have called Ramesh’s survival nothing short of a miracle. A British MP described the event as “incredible” and “heartbreaking,” especially since Ramesh lost his brother in the tragedy.

Despite the horror of the incident, the sole survivor of Air India crash serves as a living reminder that even in the darkest moments, survival is possible.
