Life and Background
Born on December 23, likely in 1990, Samuel Aboagye hailed from Obuasi East in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. While some media wrongly reported his birth year as around 1980, his older brother confirmed the correct date. He lived in New Biakoyede in the Obuasi Municipal area and had a family home in Boete. A humble and accessible man, he was known for his social responsibility and strong connection to his community. His wife and child currently live in the United States.
Education and Career
Although official records of his schooling are limited, his Facebook page lists Angel Educational Complex, and unconfirmed reports suggest he attended St. Margaret Senior High School in Obuasi. Well-educated and articulate, Samuel Aboagye was an effective grassroots organizer and communicator.
He served as Deputy Director General in Charge of Relief and Protocol at the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), helping coordinate Ghana’s disaster response. As the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the NDC in Obuasi East, he initially won his election by 19 votes before a controversial recount reversed the result. Despite this setback, he challenged the decision in court and remained committed to his campaign for transparency, empowerment, and fairness.
Political Vision and Impact
Samuel Aboagye’s leadership style was deeply rooted in social democratic values. He championed accountability, environmental sustainability, and equal opportunities for mining communities. Known for organizing campaigns for good causes, he inspired hope in the people of Obuasi East.
One of his major missions before his death was to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi, aimed at promoting responsible mining and creating jobs.
Philanthropy and Community Support
Samuel Aboagye’s legacy in Obuasi is not only political but humanitarian. He donated GH¢180,000 to victims of violent clashes between AngloGold Ashanti and illegal miners in early 2025. In March 2024, he provided GH¢25,000 to help victims of a fire at the Boete timber market. His efforts demonstrated his compassion and commitment to supporting vulnerable groups.
Tragic Death and National Mourning
On August 6, 2025, Samuel Aboagye boarded a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter with seven others, including the Defence Minister and Environment Minister. They were traveling to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining and environmental restoration mission when the helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District, killing all onboard.
President John Mahama declared three days of national mourning, promising a transparent investigation. Black box data was retrieved, and the incident was described as a personal loss to the nation’s leadership.
