A sudden snowstorm on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest has trapped almost 1,000 people. This area is very popular with hikers and climbers. The heavy snow started on a Friday evening and got worse fast on the eastern slopes of the mountain. Many people were staying in campsites high up, over 4,900 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level. Rescuers and hundreds of local villagers have been working hard to clear the huge amounts of snow that are blocking the roads.
People who were rescued said the weather was surprisingly bad and not normal for October. One trekking group member, Chen Geshuang, said the guide had never seen such bad weather in the month of October before, and it all happened too quickly. Because of the danger, the local tourism company has stopped selling tickets and entry to the entire Everest Scenic Area. The important Mount Everest rescue efforts continue as teams guide more people down the mountain in stages.
This extreme weather is hitting the entire region. South of Tibet, in Nepal, very heavy rain has caused major landslides and floods, killing at least 47 people. Roads are blocked, and bridges have been washed away.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is known for being very dangerous, even though many people try to climb it every year. In recent times, the mountain has had problems with too many people climbing, environmental damage, and too many fatal accidents. Getting everyone to safety is the top priority in this incident.
