Ghana and China have taken a major step toward strengthening their trade partnership with a new agreement that grants Ghana a 0% export tariff on all goods exported to China. The deal was confirmed following key negotiations between Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi.

Mr. Ablakwa shared the news on social media, highlighting that the Ghana China 0% export tariff agreement will encourage more exports, help create new jobs, and support local businesses. With trade volumes between the two countries reaching over $11 billion in 2024, the deal is expected to deepen economic cooperation.

As part of the discussions, both nations agreed to explore major industrial projects. These include the setup of an integrated aluminium industry powered by Ghana’s bauxite resources and supported by a new rail network to reduce transport costs. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal to boost industrial production and local value creation.

In addition, Ghana and China aim to establish an electric car factory in Ghana, which will use the country’s lithium deposits. Lithium is a key material used in batteries for electric vehicles, making this project important for the future of clean energy and innovation in Africa.

To support this long-term partnership, both countries are preparing to sign a special Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). This agreement will provide a clear structure for trade growth, technology transfer, and investment in joint ventures.

The Ghana China 0% export tariff marks a new era in trade and diplomacy, rooted in a relationship that goes back 65 years to the days of Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao. Ghana’s government sees this deal as a tool for national development and an example of how diplomacy can bring economic transformation.
