At the recent graduation ceremony of AngloGold Ashanti’s Youth Apprenticeship Programme, Nana Bosompem Kitikyi Apenteng II, the Odumase Kontihene, addressed a critical issue threatening the future of Obuasi—illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
He firmly warned against the idea that anyone can use unlawful means to bring down AngloGold Ashanti. “Anyone who helps or plans to collapse AngloGold Ashanti is not only ungrateful but also a person who stands in the way of development,” he stated. He emphasized that the company is the backbone of Obuasi, and without it, the city would struggle to survive.
Nana Bosompem called on every resident of Obuasi to pray for the company’s success, explaining that the more AngloGold Ashanti progresses, the more benefits the city will enjoy. He highlighted the company’s unique contribution, noting, “I have never seen any other group or company train 100 individuals at once like AngloGold Ashanti has done.”
He advised the youth to stay away from illegal mining and focus on using their skills for positive growth. He reminded them that hard work doesn’t kill and that no company will hire someone who is lazy or disobedient. “You’re paid to work and follow instructions. If you can’t do that, you won’t be able to accomplish anything,” he warned.
Nana Bosompem also urged the people of Obuasi not to rely solely on AngloGold Ashanti for jobs. Instead, he encouraged graduates and other skilled individuals to start their own businesses, which can help create more employment in the city and reduce dependency on illegal mining.
Addressing concerns about job opportunities, he clarified that while AngloGold Ashanti hires workers from across Ghana and the world for specific roles, the company also makes room for local talent. He pleaded with the company to increase its support for local contractors and suppliers, allowing more Obuasi residents to be involved in different parts of the business—even as partners.
In closing, he emphasized that illegal mining not only harms the environment but also threatens the future of AngloGold Ashanti and, by extension, the prosperity of Obuasi. His message was clear: protect the company, promote development, and stay away from galamsey.
