The US visa restrictions for Ghanaians have been significantly updated under the latest policy from the United States government. Most Ghanaian applicants for non-immigrant visas are now limited to single-entry visas valid for only three months, a major shift from previous years.

According to information from the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs, this policy change applies to several categories of travelers, including students, tourists, and business visitors. Previously, many Ghanaians received multi-year, multiple-entry visas that allowed for easier and more flexible travel to the U.S.

Diplomatic and government officials holding A-class visas will remain unaffected, continuing to enjoy multiple-entry visas valid between 24 and 60 months. Similarly, K1 and K2 visa holders—typically issued to a U.S. citizen’s fiancé(e) and their children under 21—will still get six-month visas, but only for single entry.

For those applying under the K3 and K4 family visa categories, the policy remains more generous, with multiple entries permitted for up to 24 months.

However, the strictest part of the new US visa restrictions for Ghanaians affects holders of B-class visas, which include tourism and business visits. These applicants will now receive only single-entry visas valid for 90 days. Student visa applicants are also affected, F-1 visa holders can now enter the U.S. only once, and their visas expire in three months, regardless of the duration of their academic programs.

This policy change follows a global reciprocity system used by the United States. Essentially, visa terms offered to foreign nationals reflect the terms their home countries offer to U.S. citizens. Nigeria recently faced similar changes, and Ghana now joins the list.

While the U.S. has not officially explained why Ghana’s visa rules have been altered, such changes often relate to diplomatic relationships, immigration enforcement strategies, or national security updates.

The new US visa restrictions for Ghanaians could significantly impact frequent travelers, especially those in business or academic circles. Many may now face higher costs, more paperwork, and longer wait times, as they will have to apply for a new visa before each trip.

Travelers are advised to consult the U.S. Embassy or certified immigration professionals to understand how the new rules apply to them and plan accordingly.
